Photographer and Director Zach Anderson Takes Us on a Road Trip
Zach Anderson has a zeal for creation. He never leaves the house without a camera or a 21st-century substitution, his iPhone, knowing that he doesn’t want to miss an opportunity to document the world around him. If the past year and a half has taught us anything, it’s that we never want to miss a moment with our friends, doing things we love. Zach surrounds himself with a cohort of fellow artists; musicians, models, and designers, so he constantly finds himself in scenarios where creativity abounds.
Akin to Kerouac, Zach has a wanderlust that can’t be extinguished. If the opportunity arises to travel, Zach is the first to pack his bag. This spontaneous quality shows up in his work; friends in the middle of a dance party, his trusty sidekick pup Penelope mid -ump, or a ray of sunlight hitting just at the right moment. His “always prepared with a camera” tendencies combined with his extreme desire to see as much of the world as he can, has created this collection of images that lets us join him on the road.
What do you take away from these trips?
The importance of living in the moment. Time is fleeting, so the people you surround yourself with and the experiences you have together are paramount. I feel lucky to have friends that are willing to be my models and who I think represent what it is to be a millennial in 2021.
What was a memorable moment?
My friend was DJing at a drag show on the fourth of July. I didn’t have a camera on me, so I shot this on my phone but I had to capture the energy of the room. This trip was truly spontaneous. At the last minute, I decided to drive to Seattle and had to find a hotel for my dog, but it was worth it in the end. The set was a true celebration and the energy in the room was so high, I feel like this single shot captured that and I’m glad to have this memory forever.
What do you hope people learn about you and your work after viewing this series?
That I am always looking for the shot. I don’t leave the house without either a camera or my iPhone. I love walking around and when I see something interesting, I take a picture. My friends are constantly annoyed because I’m always stopping to take a photo, but it’s important to me to document the world and people around me. I’m able to be spontaneous in my shooting too. Most of the photos in this series were taken off the cuff without any direction. Sometimes, those are the best shots.
